Why Use Concrete Corrosion Mitigation Products?

The annual cost of repairs or replacement of concrete structures as a result of corrosion can be huge. Concrete corrosion repair and replacement of corroded structures directly cost the US economy $276 billion, or approximately 3.1% of the country’s gross domestic product. That amount can double to more than 6% of GDP, or about $552 billion, if you factor in the loss of productivity while these structures are being repaired or replaced.

The practical, cost-efficient alternative to extensive repairs or complete replacement is concrete corrosion mitigation through advanced, cost-efficient concrete repair technologies. One of the cost-efficient concrete corrosion mitigation strategies is using a barrier system.

Using Barrier Systems

Using barrier systems calls for the use of sealers, coatings and overlays to prevent any future corrosion.

The MiraPrime Aqua-Blok XL is a good example. It works by penetrating the concrete’s pore structure and turning water-soluble calcium hydroxide into dense, crystalline insoluble calcium silicate hydrate gel. The process removes harmful chlorides and contaminants within the concrete matrix and increases its density. It quickly seals the concrete’s pores as well, effectively blocking moisture and reducing moisture vapor emission while augmenting resistance to chemical substances.

Another effective barrier is Miraprime AquaBlok XLi, which is a hybrid of lithium and potassium silicate. It’s ideal for concrete plagued by Alkali Silica Reactivity, which causes high porosity and moisture emission. Its lithium and potassium blend seals concrete surfaces quickly, penetrating deep into the concrete’s capillary structure, and waterproofing the material from the inside-out.

For aged concrete, you may use either AquaBlok XL or XLi, in conjunction with MiraPrime Concrete Conditioner, as your corrosion mitigation strategy. This conditioner quickly boosts the alkalinity of old, carbonated concrete to a pH level above 10, providing a catalyst for faster and more enhanced crystalline reaction.
