The primary objective of the restoration and protection of concrete is to produce a repair strategy that protects and maintains moisture vapor permeability, one of the most crucial key properties of concrete. This is often a very complex process that requires careful consideration of many factors. It is crucial that one understands the difference between concrete damages and concrete defects. All too often concrete repairs are undertaken that only address the visible and obvious damage. However, failure to identify and address the underlying cause of the defect that manifested the damage can lead to inadequate and premature failure of completed repairs. In order to select the most suitable repair materials for any given project, the root cause and extent of each underlying defect must be clearly identified and understood. Cementitious coatings offer significant advantages and critical physical properties that maximize sustainability of the repair and protection of concrete structures.

Basic understanding of protective coatings for concrete, masonry, and other types of construction materials.
